Equipment QA: Wax Laces

Question: Some coaches recommend wax laces for kids who can’t get their laces tight enough. Others say not to use them. What do you think? Answer: If your player is having trouble getting his or her skates tight enough, wax laces are definitely worth a try. And the good news is you can try them for far less than the cost of a good hamburger. The advantage to wax laces is that when you pull them tight, they stay tight. The laces don’t slip back as you continue to lace. But, there is a disadvantage: they’re harder to untie. Plus, some people don’t like the feeling of the wax on their hands. (Hey, if skate lacing and unlacing were easy, 6-year-olds would do it themselves from day one. For tips on skate tying, click here to view a video.)
