Equipment QA: Hockey Socks

Question: What is the difference between the new hockey socks and the old knit ones? Is there any reason to choose one over the other?

Answer: The newer, sleeker hockey socks became popular during the last Olympics and are now worn in by NHL teams. These hockey socks, which are lightweight and breathable, are attached with Velcro or tape just like the knit socks. They are designed to keep shinguards firmly in place and to keep their shape. How long these socks last, however, is based largely on the player’s position and style of play. The knit socks tend to get holes and snags in them as well. See a video and discussion of the socks here, which may help you decide whether to try these socks for yourself or a team. To order your NHL team’s colors, click here.
